Abel Quezada
Abel Quezada Calderón (1920-1991) was part of the entourage of the then President of Mexico, Luis Echeverría Álvarez, on a journey that took him through countries such as Canada, England, Belgium, France, the former Soviet Union, and China, between March 28 and April 26, 1973.
His friend Joaquín Diez Canedo, editor of the renowned publishing house Joaquín Mortiz, suggested to Quezada that he create a book based on the notes he would take during his trip. To do this, they prepared several blank book mock-ups for Quezada to draw his observations and experiences. The artist chose two mock-ups that suited him in terms of size and paper texture.
In this way, Quezada filled page after page with drawings of what he saw throughout the journey. In addition to direct sketches, he used all kinds of printed papers he found along the way, as well as a Polaroid camera.
The result was the book "48,000 Kilometers at the Origin Line," from which the two tapestries "Reception in Beijing" and "Shanghai - from the Shanghai Hotel" originate.
