Violet Butterflies brings together a selection of works spanning different periods in the career of artist Olaf Breuning, encompassing paintings, sculptures, and drawings. Throughout his career, the artist has developed a visual language that combines the representation of natural elements and scenes of everyday life featuring human and animal groups, adding a sharp sense of humor and a critical perspective that have become hallmarks of his work.
The exhibition includes sculptures from the series *Sad and Worried Animals *, crafted from various types of stone, such as quarry stone and American black stone, in which the animals take on almost human-like expressions. It also features recent sculptures in bronze and ceramic that revolve around the figure of "the artist," representing the sadness, uncertainty, and unease of the contemporary artist through different emotions.
The exhibition is complemented by a selection of drawings that reveal the conceptual processes behind his practice. While some function as standalone works, others have served as a starting point for the creation of photographs and sculptures, revealing the interconnection between the different media Breuning employs.
In painting, the artist proposes a reflection on the medium itself through an unconventional process: he carves figures and forms into wooden blocks, which he then inks and transfers to the canvas using direct pressure. This method requires the artist to position himself over the block placed on the surface, thus generating an image that is printed directly. The exhibition offers a broad perspective spanning more than three decades of production, allowing viewers to observe the evolution of the conceptual approaches that have defined his work. More than a closed retrospective, the exhibition presents a dynamic approach to how Breuning's work has engaged with the European art scene of the early 21st century, as well as the transformations resulting from his residence in New York over the past two decades, a context that has significantly influenced his processes, languages, and modes of production.
Violet butterflies reúne una selección de obras que atraviesan distintos momentos de la trayectoria del artista Olaf Breuning, integrando piezas pictóricas, escultóricas y de dibujo. A lo largo de su producción, el artista ha desarrollado un lenguaje visual que combina la representación de elementos naturales y escenas de la vida cotidiana protagonizadas por grupos humanos y animales, añadiendo un agudo sentido del humor y una mirada crítica que se han consolidado como rasgos distintivos de su obra.
La exposición incluye esculturas pertenecientes a la serie Sad and worried animals, realizadas en diversos tipos de piedra, como cantera y piedra negra americana, en las que los animales adquieren expresiones cercanas a lo humano. Asimismo, se presentan esculturas recientes trabajadas en bronce y cerámica que giran en torno a la figura de “el artista”, representado en distintas emociones la tristeza, la incertidumbre y el desasosiego del artista contemporáneo.
El recorrido se complementa con una selección de dibujos que evidencian los procesos conceptuales detrás de su práctica. Mientras algunos funcionan como obras autónomas, otros han servido como punto de partida para la realización de fotografías y esculturas, revelando la interconexión entre los distintos medios que emplea Breuning.
En pintura, el artista propone una reflexión sobre el propio medio a través de un proceso poco convencional: talla figuras y formas en bloques de madera que posteriormente entinta para transferirlas al lienzo mediante presión directa. Este método hace que el artista se sitúe sobre el bloque colocado sobre la superficie, generando así una imagen que se imprime de manera directa. La exposición ofrece una perspectiva amplia de más de tres décadas de producción, permitiendo observar la evolución de los planteamientos conceptuales que han definido su trabajo. Más que una revisión retrospectiva cerrada, la muestra plantea un acercamiento dinámico a la forma en que la obra de Breuning ha dialogado con la escena artística europea de inicios del siglo XXI, así como a las transformaciones derivadas de su residencia en Nueva York durante las últimas dos décadas, contexto que ha influido de manera significativa en sus procesos, lenguajes y formas de producción.
