As it has every year since 1995, Tequila Reserva de la Familia , Casa Cuervo's most iconic label, presents a commemorative edition designed by an artist. This year, Mexican artist Alejandra Venegas was commissioned to reinterpret the box of this premium spirit.
“Nature operates as a completely intertwined whole. That’s why in my work I’m interested in creating relationships between elements that apparently don’t have them,” Venegas said at a press conference.
As part of the creative work, the painter and sculptor visited the agave fields of José Cuervo and the “La Rojeña” distillery to learn about the tequila-making process, which takes time and respects natural cycles.
Thus, the artist, a graduate of the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda”, built a symbolic universe that goes from the micro to the macro and both concepts are intertwined.
“The agave thorns transform into clouds, the coas evoke full moons, and the cycles of nature are reflected in vibrant compositions,” she said, also speaking about the inspiration that arises through the practice of walking. “When you are in the middle of a landscape and your gaze is wild, but suddenly it goes to a leaf, to the sky, to a shadow (you focus on the details).”
The moon emerges as one of the central symbols of the project, alluding to time, the growth of the agave and slow processes, values shared between the artist's work and the making of tequila.
This limited edition, in addition to celebrating the agave landscape of Tequila, Jalisco, is inspired by Mexican craftsmanship. This connection is no coincidence; each bottle of Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo is handcrafted, aged for 40 months in barrels, and bottled and signed by hand.
The project, which also includes an exhibition, was curated by a committee made up of figures such as Juan Domingo Beckmann, curator Patrick Charpenel, and Zélika García, director and founder of ZSONAMACO, the main Mexican contemporary art fair.
Alejandra Venegas's work arrives as part of the 30th anniversary celebration of this initiative that unites the worlds of tequila and art. And it's shaping up to be a vibrant and festive edition.
Como cada año, desde 1995, Tequila Reserva de la Familia, la etiqueta más emblemática de Casa Cuervo, presenta una edición conmemorativa intervenida por un artista. En esta ocasión la mexicana Alejandra Venegas fue la encargada de reinterpretar la caja de este destilado premium.
“La naturaleza opera como un todo completamente entrelazado. Por eso en mi obra me interesa crear relaciones entre elementos que aparentemente no las tienen”, dijo Venegas en conferencia de prensa.
Como parte del trabajo creativo, la pintora y escultora visitó los campos de agave de José Cuervo y la destilería “La Rojeña” para conocer el proceso de elaboración del tequila, el cual toma su tiempo y los ciclos naturales se respetan.
Así, la artista egresada de la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”, construyó un universo simbólico que va de lo micro a lo macro y ambos conceptos se entrelazan.
“Las espinas del agave se transforman en nubes, las coas evocan lunas llenas y los ciclos de la naturaleza se reflejan en composiciones vibrantes”, dijo para también hablar de la inspiración que surge a través de la práctica de la caminata. “Cuando uno está en medio de un paisaje y la mirada está como loca, pero de pronto se va a una hoja, al cielo, a una sombra (se enfoca en los detalles)”.
La Luna emerge como uno de los símbolos centrales del proyecto, aludiendo al tiempo, al crecimiento del agave y a los procesos lentos, valores compartidos entre la obra de la artista y la elaboración del tequila.
Esta edición limitada, además de celebrar el paisaje agavero de Tequila, Jalisco, se inspira en la artesanía mexicana. Esta relación no es casualidad, cada botella de Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo se elabora artesanalmente, después de haber permanecido 40 meses en barricas, y se envasa y firma a mano.
La curaduría del proyecto, que también se conforma por una exposición, estuvo a cargo del comité integrado por figuras como Juan Domingo Beckmann, el curador Patrick Charpenel y Zélika García, directora y fundadora de ZSONAMACO, la principal feria de arte contemporáneo mexicana.
La obra de Alejandra Venegas llega en el marco de la celebración de los 30 años de esta iniciativa que une los mundos del tequila y el arte. Y se percibe como una edición vibrante y festiva.
