The ball is already starting to roll in the imagination of Mexico City residents, a few months before the start of the 2026 World Cup . The Jumex Museum is getting into the spirit and presents the exhibition ' Football and Art . That Same Emotion' , which will be open from March 28 to July 26, 2026 in its galleries and plaza.
The exhibition, curated by Guillermo Santamarina , brings together nearly 100 works by 60 artists from 13 countries, including Mexico, the United States, France, Japan and South Africa.
The tour includes paintings , sculptures , installations , photographs and videos that explore how football, beyond goals and stands, functions as a universal language full of aesthetics, criticism and community.
“Football is a system of imagination and information that exhales and inhales the complex reality of the human species in the 21st century,” explains Santamarina.
The curator emphasizes that football is much more than a sport; it is a social and cultural ritual that reflects immeasurable emotions .
The museum's design, by architect Mauricio Rocha , transforms the spaces to evoke football symbols such as the pitch , the ball , the stands , and the stadium . The thematic sections address gender, identity, globalization, and politics, showcasing both the sport's playful power and its critical dimensions.
Recycled seats from the Azteca Stadium
The Jumex Museum also commissioned works from Mexican artists such as Diego Berruecos , Iñaki Bonillas , and Sofía Echeverri . In the museum's plaza, the Tercerunquinto collective will install " Tribunas ," a sculptural piece made from recycled seats from Azteca Stadium . This public space will be used for literary, musical, and performance activities, and even for broadcasting sporting events during the exhibition .
The exhibition's visual identity is the work of artist Clotilde Jiménez , who created collages inspired by the visual energy of football . With this, the museum reaffirms its commitment to bridging the gap between contemporary art and popular culture.
Since its opening in 2013, the Jumex Museum has established itself as a key platform for contemporary art in Mexico.
Now, with ' Football and Art . That same emotion' , the institution joins the world championship atmosphere and offers a different perspective, football as a trigger for imaginaries, as a meeting place and as a cultural phenomenon that transcends borders.
Because yes, the World Cup is played on the field, but also in art. And the Jumex stadium has already blown the starting whistle.
El balón ya empieza a rodar en la imaginación chilanga, a unos meses de que arranque el Mundial de Futbol 2026, el Museo Jumex se pone la camiseta y presenta la exposición 'Fútbol y Arte. Esa misma emoción', que estará abierta del 28 de marzo al 26 de julio de 2026 en sus galerías y plaza.
La muestra, curada por Guillermo Santamarina, reúne cerca de 100 obras de 60 artistas de 13 países, entre ellos México, Estados Unidos, Francia, Japón y Sudáfrica.
El recorrido incluye pinturas, esculturas, instalaciones, fotografías y videos que exploran cómo el fútbol, más allá de los goles y las tribunas, funciona como un lenguaje universal cargado de estética, crítica y comunidad.
“El fútbol es un sistema de imaginación y de información que exhala e inhala la compleja realidad de la especie humana del siglo XXI”, explica Santamarina
El curador destaca que el balompié es mucho más que un deporte, es un ritual social y cultural que refleja emociones incalculables.
La museografía, diseñada por el arquitecto Mauricio Rocha, transforma los espacios del museo para evocar símbolos futboleros como la cancha, el balón, las gradas y el estadio. Los núcleos temáticos abordan género, identidad, globalidad y política, mostrando tanto la fuerza lúdica del deporte como sus dimensiones críticas.
Butacas recicladas del Estadio Azteca
El Museo Jumex también comisionó obras a artistas mexicanos como Diego Berruecos, Iñaki Bonillas y Sofía Echeverri. En la Plaza del museo, el colectivo Tercerunquinto instalará 'Tribunas', una pieza escultórica hecha con butacas recicladas del Estadio Azteca. Este espacio público servirá para actividades literarias, musicales, performáticas y hasta transmisiones de partidos durante la exhibición.
La identidad visual de la exposición corre a cargo del artista Clotilde Jiménez, quien creó collages inspirados en la energía visual del fútbol. Con ello, el museo reafirma su compromiso de tender puentes entre el arte contemporáneo y la cultura popular.
Desde su apertura en 2013, el Museo Jumex se ha consolidado como una plataforma clave para el arte contemporáneo en México.
Ahora, con 'Fútbol y Arte. Esa misma emoción', la institución se suma al ambiente mundialista y ofrece una mirada distinta, el fútbol como detonador de imaginarios, como espacio de encuentro y como fenómeno cultural que trasciende fronteras.
Porque sí, el Mundial se juega en la cancha, pero también en el arte. Y el Jumex ya pitó el inicio.
