The playful, critical and ironic dimension of the Mexican cartoonist, illustrator, painter and artist Abel Quezada (1920-1991) is explored at the Kaluz Museumwith an exhibition that brings together nearly 80 pictorial works, cartoons and notebooks of the artist that reveal a little-known perspective.
The exhibition, which will remain open from today until August 31, is titled¡México-México-México! Abel Quezada , between art and sport, was conceived as a tribute to one of the most influential figures in 20th-century visual culture, emphasizing his passion for sports and his critique of football as a social phenomenon.
Historical cartoons and the phenomenon of football
During a previous tour, Ery Cámara, curator of the exhibition, commented that in this exhibition it is possible to see part of Quezada's pictorial work , as well as the cartoons he made for newspapers such as Excélsior , Ovaciones , Novedades and Últimas Noticias around 1945, his travel notebooks and some illustrations he made for magazines such as The New Yorker and Time magazine .
Cámara also highlighted that the exhibition allows us to see the enduring relevance of the artist's style , which can be perfectly understood in our time .
Added to this is his approach to baseball in his adolescence , in Comales, Tamaulipas; his way of appreciating wrestling and other international sporting events thathe covered as a reporter, of which the oil portraits he made of figures such asFernando Valenzuela and Kid González are presented.
The exhibition, presented in the context of the World Cup , borrows its title from one of his famous cartoons to offer a look at sport from the perspective ofirony and visual sensitivity.
At the time, Abel Quezada Rueda, the artist's son, highlighted the paintings and cartoons related to the theme of soccer , which, he indicated, are timeless andcould be published tomorrow and be perfectly understood.
For his part, Miguel Fernández Félix, the museum's director, said that the exhibition is a tribute to the speed and precision of his line work, which helped himcreate a narrative that goes beyond humor.
"So this exhibition pays homage to one of the great cartoonists and illustrators that Mexico had, especially from a man who was linked throughout his life tothis concern and the search for our identity and critique," he emphasized.
The three sections of Quezada's gaze
The exhibition is divided into three sections: The many faces of Abel Quezada ; The game: between art and sport ; and Criticism and humor on the court , exhibiting pieces that come from the Quezada Rueda Family Collection, the ProyectosMonclova Gallery, the Kaluz Museum and other private collections.
The first room contextualizes the artist's career through photographs , documents, early works, travel notebooks and archival materials, where it is possible to appreciate the evolution of a creator who knew how to translate his environment into a sharp and critical gaze.
The second part presents Quezada's pictorial production , which he began in a self-taught manner in 1965, where horsemen, runners, tennis and billiards players, baseball players and boxers can be seen, revealing personal memories and passions.
And it closes with his oil paintings and sports cartoons , published in 1945, which function as a mirror of the fans, the persistent chorus of "yes we can" and the contradictions of the sporting spectacle.
La dimensión lúdica, crítica e irónica del caricaturista, ilustrador, pintor y artista mexicano Abel Quezada (1920-1991) se explora en el Museo Kaluz con una exposición que reúne cerca de 80 obras pictóricas, caricaturas y cuadernos del artista que revelan una perspectiva poco conocida.
La exposición, que permanecerá abierta desde hoy hasta el 31 de agosto, se titula ¡México-México-México! Abel Quezada, entre el arte y el deporte, fue concebida como un homenaje a una de las figuras más influyentes de la cultura visual del siglo XX, destacando su pasión por el deporte y su crítica del fútbol como fenómeno social.
Caricaturas históricas y el fenómeno del fútbol
Durante una visita previa, Ery Cámara, curadora de la exposición, comentó que en esta muestra se puede apreciar parte de la obra pictórica de Quezada, así como las caricaturas que realizó para periódicos como Excélsior, Ovaciones, Novedades y Últimas Noticias alrededor de 1945, sus cuadernos de viaje y algunas ilustraciones para revistas como The New Yorker y Time.
Cámara también destacó que la exposición permite apreciar la vigencia del estilo del artista, perfectamente comprensible en la actualidad.
A esto se suma su acercamiento al béisbol en su adolescencia, en Comales, Tamaulipas; su manera de apreciar la lucha libre y otros eventos deportivos internacionales que cubrió como reportero, de los cuales se presentan los retratos al óleo que realizó de figuras como Fernando Valenzuela y Kid González.
La exposición, presentada en el contexto del Mundial, toma su título de una de sus famosas caricaturas para ofrecer una mirada al deporte desde la perspectiva de la ironía y la sensibilidad visual.
En su momento, Abel Quezada Rueda, hijo del artista, destacó las pinturas y caricaturas relacionadas con el tema del fútbol, las cuales, según indicó, son atemporales y podrían publicarse mañana y ser perfectamente comprendidas.
Por su parte, Miguel Fernández Félix, director del museo, afirmó que la exposición es un tributo a la velocidad y precisión de su trazo, que le ayudó a crear una narrativa que va más allá del humor.
"Así, esta exposición rinde homenaje a uno de los grandes caricaturistas e ilustradores que ha tenido México, especialmente a un hombre que estuvo vinculado durante toda su vida a esta preocupación y a la búsqueda de nuestra identidad y crítica", enfatizó.
Las tres secciones de la mirada de Quezada
La exposición se divide en tres secciones: Los muchos rostros de Abel Quezada; El juego: entre arte y deporte; La exposición presenta crítica y humor en la cancha, con piezas provenientes de la Colección Familiar Quezada Rueda, la Galería ProyectosMonclova, el Museo Kaluz y otras colecciones privadas.
La primera sala contextualiza la trayectoria del artista a través de fotografías, documentos, obras tempranas, cuadernos de viaje y material de archivo, donde se aprecia la evolución de un creador que supo plasmar su entorno en una mirada aguda y crítica.
La segunda parte presenta la producción pictórica de Quezada, iniciada de forma autodidacta en 1965, donde se pueden observar jinetes, corredores, tenistas, jugadores de billar, beisbolistas y boxeadores, revelando recuerdos y pasiones personales.
Finaliza con sus óleos y caricaturas deportivas, publicadas en 1945, que funcionan como un espejo de los aficionados, el coro persistente de «sí se puede» y las contradicciones del espectáculo deportivo.
