The UNAM International Film Festival unveiled the official image for its sixteenth edition: the series Fulgor y Sombra (Glow and Shadow ) by Mexican visual artist Néstor Jiménez . The festival will take place from November 5 to 15, 2026, in Mexico City.
Jiménez was born in Mexico City in 1988. She graduated from the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving "La Esmeralda" and has developed a practice that spans painting, video, and installation. Her work addresses historical and political memory, the representation of territory, and the construction of collective imaginaries, often using reclaimed materials.
Fulgor y Sombra (Splendor and Shadow) is a series the artist developed from a question about extremes. Its two central characters embody seemingly opposing forces that, nevertheless, share a common origin. The tension between them reveals how similar extremes become when nuance disappears.
“I started asking myself a lot about political extremes and the times of extreme politics in which we are living. Also about how we were experiencing processes of polarization and radicalization within our societies,” Jiménez explained about the origin of the project.
With distorted bodies and an iconography that oscillates between the figurative and the fantastical, the series offers no fixed interpretations. Instead, it proposes spaces for interpretation and critical thinking, inviting us to question the images we consume and the stories that construct our collective experience.
The image as part of the festival's discourse
From its first edition, FICUNAM has treated its annual image as an extension of the questions that run through its programming. The visual identity does not function as a decorative element: it establishes links between contemporary cinema , the visual arts, and the aesthetic, political, and social discussions of the present.
The affinity between Jiménez's practice and the festival's mission was decisive in the selection. Like the films in its program, Fulgor y Sombra places complexity and ambiguity at the heart of the experience.
A tradition of collaboration with contemporary art
The decision to commission a visual artist to design the festival's image is not new. Throughout its history, FICUNAM has worked with creators such as Abraham Cruzvillegas , Carlos Amorales, Dr. Lakra , Mariana Mendivil, Zatu Straftäter, and Pablo Vargas Lugo, among others.
Each of them developed the visual identity for a different edition, transforming that space into a sustained dialogue between film and the visual arts. With Jiménez, the festival continues this line of collaboration.
Programming and details of FICUNAM 2026
The sixteenth edition of the festival will take place at venues throughout Mexico City over eleven days. In the coming weeks, the organizers will share information about the program, competitions, and national and international guests participating in this edition.
The festival recently announced French filmmaker Julie Delpy as its guest of honor. Delpy will receive the UNAM Film Archive Medal and will be featured in a retrospective, a master class, and a Q&A session. The closing event includes a film concert featuring Luis Buñuel 's Un Chien Andalou and L'Âge d'Or , accompanied live by the Silent Film Ensemble.
FICUNAM was founded in 2011 as a project of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to celebrate the best of contemporary cinema. Each edition brings together more than 100 films, combining international premieres, retrospectives of Mexican and foreign filmographies, and expanded programming.

Jiménez nació en la Ciudad de México en 1988. Egresó de la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado La Esmeralda y ha construido una práctica que transita entre la pintura, el video y la instalación. Su trabajo aborda la memoria histórica y política, la representación del territorio y la construcción de imaginarios colectivos, con frecuencia a partir de materiales recuperados.
Fulgor y Sombra es una serie que el artista desarrolló a partir de una pregunta sobre los extremos. Sus dos personajes centrales encarnan fuerzas aparentemente opuestas que, sin embargo, comparten un mismo origen. La tensión entre ambos revela cuánto se parecen los extremos cuando desaparecen los matices. \
“Empecé a preguntarme mucho sobre los extremos políticos y sobre los tiempos de extrema política en los que estamos viviendo. También sobre cómo estábamos viviendo procesos de polarización y radicalización dentro de nuestras sociedades”, explicó Jiménez sobre el origen del proyecto.
Con cuerpos distorsionados y una iconografía que oscila entre lo figurativo y lo fantástico, la serie no ofrece lecturas cerradas. Propone, en cambio, espacios para la interpretación y el pensamiento crítico, e invita a cuestionar las imágenes que se consumen y las historias que construyen la experiencia colectiva.
La imagen como parte del discurso del festival
Desde su primera edición, FICUNAM ha tratado su imagen anual como una extensión de las preguntas que atraviesan su programación. La identidad visual no funciona como recurso decorativo: establece vínculos entre el cine contemporáneo, las artes visuales y las discusiones estéticas, políticas y sociales del presente.
La afinidad entre la práctica de Jiménez y la vocación del festival fue determinante en la elección. Al igual que las películas que integran su programación, Fulgor y Sombra coloca la complejidad y la ambigüedad en el centro de la experiencia.
Una tradición de colaboración con el arte contemporáneo
La decisión de convocar a un artista visual para diseñar la imagen del festival no es nueva. A lo largo de su historia, FICUNAM ha trabajado con creadores como Abraham Cruzvillegas, Carlos Amorales, Dr. Lakra, Mariana Mendivil, Zatu Straftäter y Pablo Vargas Lugo, entre otros.
Cada uno de ellos desarrolló la identidad visual de una edición distinta, convirtiendo ese espacio en un diálogo sostenido entre el cine y las artes visuales. Con Jiménez, el festival da continuidad a esa línea de colaboraciones.
Programación y detalles de FICUNAM 2026
La decimosexta edición del festival se llevará a cabo en sedes de la Ciudad de México durante once días. En las próximas semanas, la organización compartirá información sobre la programación, las competencias y los invitados nacionales e internacionales que participarán en esta edición.
Recientemente, el festival anunció a la cineasta francesa Julie Delpy como invitada de honor. Delpy recibirá la Medalla Filmoteca UNAM y protagonizará una retrospectiva, una clase magistral y una sesión de preguntas y respuestas. El cierre incluye un cine concierto con Un perro andaluz y La edad de oro, de Luis Buñuel, acompañadas en vivo por el Ensamble Cine Mudo.
El FICUNAM nació en 2011 como un proyecto de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México para celebrar lo más destacado del cine contemporáneo.
