To challenge death by holding your breath underwater Pia Camil and Carotta Manaigo
Pia Camil, Untitled, ink on paper, 2005.
Pia
Camil and Carlotta Manaigo met at the Rhode Island School of Design,
where they both obtained Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in visual arts
in 2003. For their exhibition -To challenge death by holding your breath underwater-,
they gathered a collection of drawings and photos which capture certain
critical, fleeting moments of solitary confrontation with one self and
nature. The subjects depict young adults in circumstances that reminded
the artists of personal experiences . However, no clear narrative can
be traced. The single-image -stories-, lost in a sea of ambivalent
imagery, attempt to project liberation and uncertainty. The -message-,
if there is one, is a deep rooted feeling for contemplation, and the
realization that such fleeting moments often highlight life's essence
and meaning.
